our d.i.y. cat plate gets licked clean: purina muse® natural cat food is a hit! #mycatmymuse #ad

As you may know, my junior pet sitters are obsessed with crafts, DIY, and anything that makes a giant mess. Me...not so much. I pick up poop all day, so I'm okay with not making a mess at home. When they want to get their inner-Picasso on, I try to find the least invasive-to-my-life project that will also satisfy their artistic yearnings. I'm a great mother in other ways. Swear. So when the junior pet sitters learned that we had the chance to check out a new natural cat food with our favorite black cat, they jumped at the chance to "add a little something special" to the whole she-bang, and it just SCREAMED Halloween!

As a professional pet sitter, I'm often asked for pet food recommendations. That means we're always on the prowl for nutritious, natural pet food. I went on a mission to find one of our favorite clients, Jacopo, a new quality food. We love browsing our local PetSmart for the best in pet nutrition because there is such a variety to choose from. When we went with Jacopo in mind, we discovered Purina Muse® Natural Cat Food, sold exclusively at PetSmart. I love exclusivity, but I'm going to fill you in on it, anyway. 'Cause I'm nice like that.

discovering the variety purina muse® natural cat food has to offer

I'm a firm believer in rotational feeding for cats and dogs, so I was on the hunt for a cat food that offered a lot of "recipes" and options. I found Purina Muse, and was totally impressed with the giant array of cans and clear tubs in the cat food section at PetSmart. In fact, I kind-of felt a bit overwhelmed and impressed. Who knew?

Purina Muse Natural Cat Food was easy to find in the cat food aisle of our local PetSmart.

Purina Muse offers over 30 recipes. What choices! With Purina Muse, you don't have to choose between nutrition and food that tastes great. Your cat can have both when you choose Muse. There were so many wonderful options that I had to reel-it-in and focus. You might benefit from my discipline...the food falls into five main categories, all of which include the essential nutrients cats need to thrive, and most of which are grain-free:

• in chowder (clear tub)

• in broth (clear tub)

• with toppers (clear tub)

• paté (can)

• in gravy (can)

I love that many Purina Muse Natural Cat Food Varieties come in clear tubs so you can see what you're getting.

I love that many Purina Muse Natural Cat Food Varieties come in clear tubs so you can see what you're getting.

My mind was blown when I started to consider the options. I don't know that I've ever seen such a great variety in natural cat food. There was chicken with tomato and carrot, turkey and spinach, sea bass and herring, tuna and tilapia with a baby clam topper, and ocean whitefish with an anchovy topper, just to name a few. Don't tell anyone, but I was getting a bit hungry, myself, just checking out the different options. Perhaps I should have had lunch, first. Never shop hungry. I selected a few different kinds to try so we could find out which would become Jacopo's favorites. I especially love the clear tubs that the broth and chowder varieties come in. You can see right through the package so that you know exactly what you're getting. That works. Oh, and–added bonus points for Purina Muse–the packaging is recyclable.

What's best about Purina Muse?

• all recipes are made with real fish or poultry

• there are no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives

• the recipes are 100% complete and balanced for adult cats

• there are thirty different recipes, twenty-four of which are grain-free

Naturally, we had to design a custom Halloween plate for Jacopo, our classic black cat Halloween muse. Because kids. Because crafts. Once we chose a few varieties for Jacopo to try, we set out to find the supplies we'd need to create our Halloween gift for him.

diy ceramic cat dish with sharpie embellishment

When my junior pet sitters, Porter and Campbell, were looking to get their creative on, I freaked a little, and then figured it out. They especially love to make things for our clients around the holidays, so something of that genre made sense to satisfy their monstrous craft-craving. I can sometimes be a bit of a disaster when it comes to creating anything too elaborate. When the kids asked me if they could make something Halloween-themed for Jacopo, a simple project a friend told me about came to mind as the perfect option: a ceramic-cat-dish-decorated-with-Sharpie-pens-and-baked-in-the-oven-to-set-the-design. Easy peasy, right? RIGHT? Looking for some support, here!

Let's make this!

1. SUPPLIES

Our DIY cat dish required minimal supplies.

Our DIY cat dish required minimal supplies.

THE DISH: In order to avoid whisker fatigue, it is important to provide cats with a shallow food dish. We poked around at a couple of local stores and found the perfect saucer-like, plain white dish at IKEA. It had a smooth surface for the kids to decorate on, was shallow, and was the perfect size. Since they were only a couple of dollars a piece, we purchased a few extras for future creations (or do-overs).

THE SHARPIES: We wanted to create something fun for Jacopo for Halloween, so we chose a simple orange and black color palette. Sharpies come in just about any color you can imagine, so this project would work great for any holiday or occasion.

2. DECORATING

Wash and thoroughly dry your dish before decorating.

Decorate your plate. The only limitation in design is your creativity! In keeping with the Halloween spirit, my son, Porter, created a spooky graveyard scene with a black cat, and my daughter, Campbell, created a jack-o-lantern face. They had a lot of fun embellishing their dishes and added Jacopo's name for that personal touch. BOO!

The junior pet sitters had a blast decorating their cat dishes.

After you're done with your masterpiece, let the design dry completely.

3. BAKING

After the artists finished their masterpieces, into the oven they went (the plates, not the artists).

After the artists finished their masterpieces, into the oven they went (the plates, not the artists).

By baking the decorated dishes, the Sharpie designs become permanent. There are quite a few suggestions and theories out there regarding Sharpie design and ceramics. What works best is hotly debated by those in the crafting scene. We tried a few different methods (good thing we had extras) and found the way that we achieved the best results:

• put the dish on a baking sheet in a cold oven

• set the oven to 450° and set a timer for 30 minutes

• once the timer goes off, turn the oven off, but leave the dish in the oven until it is completely cool

• once cooled, the plate can be washed (though ours have held up nicely in the dishwasher, you may wish to hand wash, just to be safe)

Trust me, if I can pull this off, you can, too. The kids had a blast decorating their plates with Jacopo in mind.

the taste test

With our Halloween-inspired custom plates in hand, we ventured off to find our muse. We knew just where to go.

As you know, I'm a professional pet sitter, and Jacopo is a pretty awesome cat client of mine. His uplifting personality never fails to put a smile on my face. He's always up for some fun, and he was eager to try Purina Muse® Natural Cat Food.

Purina Muse provided Jacopo with great-tasting natural nutrition he couldn't resist even for a second.

Jacopo didn't want to miss even a tiny morsel.

Jacopo didn't want to miss even a tiny morsel.

He dug right in to the whitefish with anchovy topper. In fact, he devoured the whole portion, although he'd already eaten breakfast. He licked his plate clean, then looked under and around the plate end even tried to move it to see if there might just be a morsel he left behind. It was quite clear that he gave the taste a paws-up review. I loved introducing him to a healthy, natural food option, and his mom, Lisa, was thrilled, too. We had a great laugh together about how crazy Jacopo was about it. She is eager to let Jacopo try the other varieties, but we decided it best not to stuff him until he popped on the first go-around. I wouldn't be surprised if Lisa switches Jacopo and his siblings over to Purina Muse permanently. Jacopo and Lisa loved the custom plates the kids made, too, though I think Jacopo liked them better with a full plate of food covering the design.

how to transition your dog to a new food with #PinnacleHealthyPets #sponsored

While some dogs have stomachs of steel, some don't. It can quickly become apparent when we've transitioned our dogs to a new food too quickly. While they pay in discomfort, we pay in messy clean-up duties. And nobody wants that. The two most important things to focus on when transitioning your pooch to a new food are QUANTITY (how quickly you transition) and QUALITY (how healthy the food is). When you transition your dog gradually to a food that has limited, quality ingredients, you set him up for success.

quantity: how to make the transition

Any time you switch your dog's food, it's important to make the transition slowly for two reasons.

1. Your dog will likely be more accepting of the new food.

2. Your dog's digestive system will have time to ease into the new situation, which is especially important for dogs with sensitive tummies.

I suggest a 1/4 over 4 days formula, which will gradually transition your pet over the course of 12 days. You'll switch 1/4 of your dog's food to the new food for four days, then increase the amount of new food by 1/4 every four days. It looks like this:

quality: what you transition to matters

I am a firm believer that the quality of food you feed your dog affects their overall health. A poor quality diet (I'm not naming names) means your dog won't shine–literally. If you notice the dull coat and lack of energy on the outside, what do you think is going on on the inside?

Instead, do your research and read the ingredient list. Make sure the food your select for your dog is of the highest quality. What's not in the food is as important as what is in the food. Pinnacle® Pet Food is a great example of a high quality food that will provide your dog with the energy and nutrients he needs to be active and healthy. We've recently transitioned N.A.S.H.A. to Pinnacle's duck and sweet potato formula.

We believe in canine rotational feeding, which means N.A.S.H.A. is fed a few different high-quality foods, and we transition her frequently. We feel that this keeps her interested in eating and since each food has something a bit different to offer, we feel that it keeps her healthier. We have a few favorites that we come back to, and grain-free Pinnacle is now in our lineup.

what's great about pinnacle

Pinnacle is all about holistic pet nutrition, an approach that focuses on the overall health of the pet. They say:

In order to have a healthier, more active, and happier dog, food choice is key. We tried Pinnacle's duck and sweet potato recipe, which has healthy ingredients focused on nutritional balance. And since the food is made in their California plant, they have complete control over production.

what's inside pinnacle's duck and sweet potato recipe?

• duck–provides an excellent source of protein that your pet needs to be active

the results of N.A.S.H.A.'s transition

First and foremost, N.A.S.H.A. loved the duck and sweet potato formula. We transitioned her gradually according to my formula, and, as we always do, we mixed in turmeric and apple cider vinegar. She took right to it and seemed very excited about the new culinary adventure. Most of the food she eats has either chicken, beef, or salmon as the meat-sourced protein, so duck is a fairly unique variety for her.

N.A.S.H.A. loves to go on family hikes.

N.A.S.H.A. loves to go on family hikes.

N.A.S.H.A. is a ten-year-old mixed terrier. Though she's getting on in years, her little legs keep up with our active family. And thank goodness it's fall so we can be more active outdoors. Those of us from Phoenix go into an indoor hibernation-like state during the sweltering summers, so fall is our time to shine. Whether she joins us for a family hike, splashes around in the pool, or plays catch (yes, she throws back, so it's more than fetch), she keeps busy and has a healthy, active lifestyle. We want to keep it that way, so we do a lot of research on the food we feed her. Her diet has to sustain her activity level and support her health as she's approaching her senior-ish (shhhhhh) years. Pinnacle is great for all life stages and definitely fits in with our standards for superior holistic pet nutrition, so we're happy to add it to our rotation.

Fall is so close we can almost taste it, and here in Phoenix, AZ, that's a big deal. You leave the cocoon of your air-conditioned home that has sheltered you from the scorching temps and venture out into nature for the first time in months. Every summer, we ask ourselves why we live here, and then paradise comes as the seasons change, and we remember. Our family loves to be active outdoors in the fall, and one of our favorite activities to do together is hiking. We live in the desert foothills, just steps from a maze of fantastic hiking trails. Whether we want to go straight up the mountain or take a leisurely stroll at the base, we have options. Our dog, N.A.S.H.A., loves to hike with us.

Before embarking on a hike, we all fuel our bodies with nutritious food that will sustain our efforts. This is especially important when it comes to N.A.S.H.A. Though large as a lion in spirit, her body is a mere eleven pounds, so I estimate she takes at least eight steps to each of ours when we hike. It's important to us that she eat healthy food without artificial additives. Proper pet nutrition is essential to a healthy, active pooch.

So what do we feed her?

I'm a big fan of rotational feeding (would you want to eat the same thing every day for years?), so we feed her several types. That being said, it is essential that the food have high quality ingredients. We prefer grain-free varieties with limited ingredients. As with the food I put into my children's bodies, if I can't pronounce it, we don't let the dog consume it.

Pinnacle® is a great example

Pinnacle-Holistic-Pet-Nutrition

Pinnacle® Pet Food is top-notch. As part of our overall approach to holistic health, Pinnacle fits in beautifully. Why is Pinnacle pet food so great?

Pinnacle Pet Food is an excellent choice for holistic canine nutrition.

Pinnacle Pet Food is an excellent choice for holistic canine nutrition.

• high-quality ingredients that are great fuel for your pooch such as quinoa, sweet potato, pumpkin, sea kelp, and cottage cheese

• natural, healthy recipes

• high-quality proteins

• antioxidants that support a healthy immune system

• fiber to promote healthy digestion and stool

• helps with joint health and overall muscle tone (great for those long hikes)

Pinnacle Pet Food is made right in their California plant, which eases my mind. I'm that overprotective doggy mama who stresses about where N.A.S.H.A.'s food comes from. Don't judge. I still kiss my kids in front of their friends, too.

Proper canine nutrition is one of the most important things so sustain N.A.S.H.A. on our fall hikes, but there are several other things to consider when venturing out with your pooch.

top 7 things to think about when hiking with your dog

We always make sure N.A.S.H.A. gets plenty of water to drink before, during, and after our hikes.

We always make sure N.A.S.H.A. gets plenty of water to drink before, during, and after our hikes.

1. Proper Hydration. It is essential that your dog drink plenty of water before, during, and after your hike. There are collapsable bowls that can fit into your backpack or pocket, and there are even water bottles with built-in bowls or drinking attachments just for dogs.

2. Pause and think of the paws. You have hiking boots, but your dog doesn't. What is the weather like? If it's too hot, your pet's paws may burn. If it's too cold, your pet's paws could freeze. Also, consider the terrain. Paw protection such as booties are a great idea, but may make it difficult for your dog to hike over rocky or uneven surfaces. Make sure nails are properly trimmed, as well. Consider all factors, and always take your pooch's paws into consideration.

3. Always keep your pet leashed. I know, this one is a bummer, but it's so important. Especially when venturing in the great outdoors. You may encounter other dogs on the trail, or your dog may be tempted to stray off the trail after a rabbit or other enticement. No matter how well you think your dog responds to commands, still, use a leash.

4. Patrol the poo. Always bring poo bags on a hike. Biodegradable ones are best. On our local trail, there are a lot of dogs, and most of them poop within minutes of the start of the hike (so we can enjoy carrying their droppings all day, I presume). We often place our poo bags just off the trail so we don't have to hike with them, but can pick them up on the way out. There are also poo carriers your dog can wear, but I think that's kinda mean. In any case, don't be a jerk and leave your dog's poop on the trail.

Always keep your pet leashed when hiking.

Always keep your pet leashed when hiking.

5. First aid first. You don't think anything will happen, but that's just when something happens. A basic pet first aid kit can be a lifesaver, and many of the items can be used for both humans and dogs. Throw it in your hiking backpack before you depart.

6. Phone with GPS. I know...the point is to look up from your phone and get in touch with nature, but keep your phone with you in case of emergency. And your phone's GPS can help you if you get lost. Take a couple of selfies with your pooch, while you're at it.

7. Proper Nutrition. I can't stress this one enough. As I mentioned, Pinnacle Pet Food is a great one to try if you are interested in holistic nutrition for your active pooch. Set your dog up for a successful grand adventure by providing him the proper fuel.

Proper nutrition helps N.A.S.H.A. feel great during our family hikes.

trying @BetsyFarms natural chicken jerky recipe #sponsored

I love having options when it comes to purchasing pet products, and since we can never have enough to choose from when it comes to spoiling our furry friends, I'm constantly on the lookout. So when True Science reached out to me and asked if I'd like to give their products a try, I was game. True Science is dedicated to "improving pet health with extraordinary products, made in the U.S.A." Their brands are high quality, and Betsy Farms is no exception. We (well, N.A.S.H.A., really) had the opportunity to try Betsy Farms' Natural Chicken Jerky Recipe, and it did not disappoint.

As I've mentioned before, N.A.S.H.A. is quite picky about her treats, so when I'm sent something for her to try that I didn't select, myself, I wonder how she'll take to it. I won't feed her junk, so I was pleased to see that the Betsy Farms treats were up to our standards. The Natural Chicken Jerky Recipe treats have some great qualities:

• made in the U.S.A.

• chicken sourced from the U.S.A.

• no artificial flavors

• no artificial preservatives

• no artificial colors

• natural ingredients and real meat

• low fat, high protein

• wheat free

I am happy to report that N.A.S.H.A. loved them. Though I could have easily divided the large piece into several smaller ones, I can't resist her cute face, so I handed over the whole thing, much to her delight. It took her about ten seconds to consume the entire piece, which let me know that the treats met her approval.

If N.A.S.H.A. had thumbs, she'd give Betsy Farms' Natural Chicken Jerky Recipe Treats two thumbs up (and she particularly liked the large portion).

N.A.S.H.A. tries Only Natural Pet's® NEW Canine PowerStew™ #PawNatural #sponsored

As a professional pet sitter, I see all kinds of canine diets. I've fed raw, I've fed kibble, I've fed kibble with some chicken or other delight mixed in, and I've fed canned. I have to be honest. I've always been a bit of a snob when it comes to pet food. I believe in preventative health, and I think one of the–if not the–most important part of health is our diet, whether we are human or canine. I try not to judge what people feed their pets, but, secretly in my head, I do. Another confession: I've always looked down on canned dog food.

my impressions of canned dog food

I have never fed N.A.S.H.A. (or any other dog who has owned me) canned dog food. Ever.

Why?

My impression was that canned dog food is always of poor quality and less-than-stellar ingredients. I thought that a canine diet including large quantities of canned food is unhealthy for a dog's dental health since he should have something crunchy to help exercise and clean his teeth. I assumed there are always lots of artificial everything and not a lot of natural anything in canned food. A la canned green beans vs. fresh. Big diff.

enter Only Natural Pet™ Canine Powerstew™

When Only Natural Pet™ sent us their brand new Canine PowerStew™ to try, I was a bit nervous. I felt like the first time I gave my human kid something with sugar in it. I made sure to read the label before I fed it to N.A.S.H.A. "Only Natural Pet" sounds all well and good, but, then again, so does "Beneful," and we all know where that stands. The ingredient list doesn't lie.

Only Natural Pet Canine PowerStew comes in three varieties: Chicken & Liver Feast, Turkey & Duck Feast, and Beef & Lamb Feast, which we tried, initially. After reading the label, my whole impression of canned food changed. What did I see?

• high-quality, protein-rich meat as the first ingredient

• grain-free

• carrageenan-free

• healthy, real veggies for bioavailable, wholesome nutrition

• holistically-formulated, biologically-appropriate diet

• made in the USA from premium ingredients for a complete and balanced meal

• highly palatable ingredients, chunky stew style, and hydrating broth for optimal balance of health and flavor

• allergy-friendly

• it can be mixed in to your dog's regular diet or fed as a stand-alone meal

I love learning about a new natural pet food from a company that has a holistic approach to pet health, so after setting aside my judgement and bias in favor of the facts, I decided to give it a go. I would not recommend a food if I hadn't first tried it on my own guinea pig...er...dog. We frequently rotate N.A.S.H.A.'s food, so I wasn't too concerned about upsetting her tummy by trying something new.

trying Only Natural Pet PowerStew

When I opened the can, I saw chunks of real beef, green beans, and carrots. It looked so good! It didn't give off a nasty odor, as I expected (another one of my biases comes out of the woodwork), so I stuck my nose right in there and gave it a good whiff. It smelled like something I would like to eat, myself!

This stuff actually looks and smells pretty darn good!

This stuff actually looks and smells pretty darn good!

I decided to mix the food into N.A.S.H.A.'s usual dinner, which consists of whatever dry dog food is on rotation, apple cider vinegar, and turmeric. As I prepared her meal, she sat by eagerly. I guess she thought it smelled pretty good, too! I let her take a whiff out of the can as I did, and she looked up at me and wagged her tail. I was sort-of surprised that she didn't take a sample out of the can, but then I realized that she's never seen a can before and probably didn't know what to make of it.

N.A.S.H.A. gives it a sniff, but isn't sure about the can.

The PowerStew blended in nicely with N.A.S.H.A.'s food. I love how you can see the herbs in the food...the real deal.

I set down her dish, and her odd-little "I like it" feeding ritual began. She does this with her food every night no matter what, but it intensifies if it's something new that she likes. If she doesn't like it, she'll immediately turn up her nose and leave it. If it's a favorable review, she'll take out a few bits of food, place some on the floor, and place some on her "kitchen throne," a pillow she likes to lay on under our kitchen table. Boy, when you try to explain this to people, it really sounds crazy (both me and the dog). In any case, she's "hiding" it in plain site, doing her little courting dance. Oh...never mind the explanation...just see for yourself (and please excuse my daughter's interruptions)...

Healthy and she likes it. And it's in a can? Who knew? I'm impressed. And what's more exciting? This is a BRAND NEW quality food that will be available for you to order mid-July, so you won't have to wait long. It is the latest addition to Only Natural Pet's line of over 200 natural and holistic pet foods, supplements, and products.

I love mixing things up for N.A.S.H.A., because who wants to eat the same thing every single day? I think PowerStew is an excellent way for us to introduce a healthy new food into her diet. I hate to admit it, but I'm a changed pet parent. I now know that healthy canned dog food exists, and I would encourage other pooch parents to give it a shot.
