We all know I'm pro-rescue, when it comes to dogs. In fact, though I honestly have never seen a dog I didn't think was cute, I'm partial to the mixed variety, and the goofier, the better. Not shocking if you've seen my dogs.
People shy away from rescue mutts for a variety of reasons, one of which is not knowing the dog's breed. I say "eh, who cares," but many potential dog adopters are partial to a particular breed. They want a purebred for one reason or another, the least admirable being status. Common perception is that purebreds–especially rare purebreds–are better.
When I saw the video "Caso: Territorio de Zaguates" and saw what Costa Rica did to solve the problem of "too many mutts" and the perception that they were less-than, it brought me to tears through a huge smile. What a charming, creative idea. They created unique, one-of-a-kind dog breeds. And people wanted one of these exclusive "purebred mutts" all the more. Check it out and let me know what you think:
